How Katie Can Help

What is coaching?

Good question.

I often explain to young people that this is like having a sports coach, They might help you run a race or master your technique in tennis, and much of their focus is on physical health. I’m helping you to work on goals for your mental health and to support you to find strategies and actions that you can take to improve this.

Coaching is an intervention which focuses on taking positive steps forward, building on strengths and setting goals and actions to help you get there.

They way we do that is through what we call “growth mindset work,” which means setting goals that can take us from a place where can feel uncomfortable to a place where we can grow.

How can coaching help my child?

Coaching can support young people struggling with Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA), anxiety, grief, low self-esteem and confidence and separation anxiety. I have also supported young people to understand a diagnosis of autism or ADHD.

This list is not exhaustive and I am happy to have a chat with you about your child’s needs. Please see “How Long Are The Sessions?” below for more information on how we can talk together, with no obligation.

Coaching can help to:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Build resilience
  • Understanding feelings and understanding ourselves better
  • Goal setting
  • Support around exams, revision planning and stress management

This list is not exhaustive so please do get in touch to ask any questions.

Are there things you can’t help with?

I am passionate about supporting young people’s mental health, but I am not trained to work with OCD, personality disorders and eating disorders. But where appropriate, I will direct you to an expert who can help.

How do we work together?

I might have said earlier this was a bit like sports coaching, but don’t worry, I won’t be getting you to run any races in our sessions. Of course, if this was one of your goals, we could work together to see how you could achieve this!

The sessions are very relaxed and where possible, I can work in your home (subject to risk assessment and mile radius) or at a venue to be arranged.

I have an ever-growing coaching kit with art materials, feelings cards and resources, games, toys and books, and I am always on the lookout for more resources, often inspired by sessions with young people.

During our initial session, we will look together at what you would like to work on and move forward from there.

How long are the sessions?

I offer an initial free, 30-minute phone call or Zoom conversation to discuss if coaching would be appropriate for your child.

The sessions are between 50 and 60 minutes. I suggest a block of six sessions, which are paid for in advance, but if we find that we have only needed 4 or 5 sessions, then the remainder is refunded, no worries. My introductory rate is £40 per hour.
